Step 2 Know how to get it
Get a game plan & write a resume that works!
"Before everything else, getting ready is the secret to success." - Henry Ford
Congratulations on completing STEP 1: Know What You Want! Things are about to get fun, because you are ready to tell your story! Need a resume? You're almost ready to write one that is going to knock the socks off your competition. This next section is going to help you put together all your marketing materials. In other words, I'm going to show you how to write a resume that works, find the hidden jobs and be the one they want to hire!
But first, you need to figure out who your resume needs to appeal to. Most people write their resume based on where they've been, and that is a terrible mistake. You see, your resume needs to be written for your next boss, not your last one. You see, most companies use different job titles and different langauge to describe people's positions. If you slap down the titles and language of your past employers, other people might never see you because they're searching under different terms. I call that devastating problem getting lost in translation. In this section, I am going to show you how to make sure that you do not get lost in translation! That's my goal ... and I know exactly what you can do to avoid that problem.
In this section, we will cover three things:
1. How to identify your target market:
Where's your next great job hiding? There's an 80% chance the job you want will never show up online ... which means you've got to figure out how to go and find it. I'm going to show you how. I'll show you how to target the right people, companies and groups who are most likely to need your skills and want to hire you.
2. How to tell a compelling story:
"Tell me about yourself" and "What do you do?" and "Why should I hire you?" sound like simply questions, but boy can they be tough if you're not ready for them! Relax. After running through these next few videos and easy exercises, you're gonna be the one they want to hire. I'll show you how to build your most important communication pieces:
- 30-second "pitch" (your personal introduction)
- Tagline (your personal bumper sticker)
- Resume (you're gonna LOVE our resume builder!)
- Cover letters (yes, they really work ... but only if they are well-written)
- Phone & email introductions (what you say matters ... every step of the way)
3. How to make a plan that works
Do you remember reading about the four biggest barriers to success? Well, lack of focus is one of them. Most job seekers lost weeks (and sometimes months) of time (and income if they are unemployed!) spinning their wheels. They don't have a game plan. They don't know what to do on a daily basis. That is not going to happen to you! I'll show you how to se the right daily and weekly goals, and how to track your success. Even better, once you know what you're doing for activity, you can see what's working and what's not, and make adjustments.
You can do this!
If you have never gone hunting for a job before, things can start to feel overwhelming. Do not get discouraged. I promise: if you watch these videos and do these exercises, you will be the one that stands out from the herd. Are you ready? Let's go!
